Front-loading washing machines: depth, capacity and features
A front-loading washing machine is the most common type: you load the laundry through the door on the front, and a dryer or a worktop can go on top. Depth: how to measure the space
Check whether the specification gives the body depth or the depth including the door. The door and other protruding parts add a few centimetres to the total depth, the hoses need space at the back, and the open door needs space in front. Before buying, also measure the doorways on the way to the bathroom.

Capacity
- 6-7 kg. For 1-2 people or a small space.
- 8-9 kg. For a family. 9 kg is the most common capacity in our range.
- 10-11 kg and more. For a large family, frequent washing, duvets and pillows.
A machine washes well with a partial load too, so choose the capacity by the largest items you will wash and how often you wash.
Spin, noise and the energy label
The EU energy label (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2014) shows the energy class, electricity use per 100 cycles of the eco 40-60 programme, rated capacity, programme duration at full load, water use per cycle, the spin-drying efficiency class from A to G, the noise level during spinning in dB(A) and the noise class. Most of our models are energy class A. A higher spin speed, such as 1400 rpm, usually leaves less moisture in the laundry, which helps if you dry indoors or in a dryer. Compare the spin-drying efficiency class too.
A dryer on top of the washing machine
Only a front-loading machine can take a tumble dryer on top. You need the manufacturer's stacking kit that fits both models. A ready-made tower with shared controls is the LG WashTower.

Frequently asked questions
How does front loading differ from top loading?
A front-loading machine is usually 60 cm wide, and a dryer or worktop can go on top. A top-loading machine is about 40 cm wide but about 60 cm deep, and it needs space above for the lid to open.
Does spinning at 1400 or 1600 rpm damage clothes?
Follow the care label and choose a programme that suits the fabric. Programmes for delicate items use a lower spin speed, and you can also reduce it manually.
Why does the washing machine vibrate during the spin?
The most common reasons are an unevenly spread load, incorrectly adjusted feet or transport bolts that were not removed. Before the first wash the bolts must be removed and the machine levelled.
Is Wi-Fi necessary?
Not essential. In the app you can follow the programme, get a notification when it ends and download extra programmes if the model supports it.
