Pa, AirWatt and watts – what do these figures actually mean?
Specifications often quote figures such as Pa (pascals), AirWatt (AW) and watts (W). They may suggest raw power, but they do not always reflect real cleaning performance.
- Pa – vacuum pressure measured under laboratory conditions.
- AirWatt – a combination of vacuum and airflow, with no single agreed test standard.
- Watts – the motor's electricity consumption, not its cleaning power.
Two models with similar figures can clean quite differently because of their design and filtration.
Does 25,000 Pa mean better cleaning?
A high Pa figure means strong vacuum, but in real use airflow and the mechanical brush matter just as much. On carpets the decisive factor is a rotating turbo brush that mechanically lifts dirt out of the fibres.
That is why a model with lower Pa but a good motorised brush often cleans better than a model with high Pa and a plain nozzle.
The mechanical turbo brush – more important than the numbers
If your home has carpets or pets, a rotating turbo brush usually matters more than the Pa or AW figures. It mechanically loosens dirt rather than simply drawing it in.
What are you paying for?
- A more powerful and more stable motor
- Better sealing and air-channel design
- A higher-quality filtration system
- Longer battery life
- More accurate navigation on robot models
A more expensive model means fewer compromises in cleaning quality and in day-to-day convenience.
Frequently asked questions
Does a higher Pa or AirWatt figure always mean better cleaning?
No. These figures reflect theoretical suction power, while real performance also depends on the design and the quality of the brush.
Why can two vacuum cleaners with similar power clean differently?
The differences come from the air-channel design, filtration, sealing and the mechanical turbo brush.
Does a robot vacuum cleaner fully replace a classic one?
For everyday upkeep – yes. For deep carpet cleaning, stick or classic models with a motorised brush can still be more effective.
