How to choose a tumble dryer: heat pump, capacity and space
All our tumble dryers are heat pump models: LG, Bosch, Samsung, Electrolux, Candy and Gorenje. A heat pump dryer works at a lower temperature than a dryer with an electric heating element, uses less electricity and is gentler on fabrics, but the cycle is usually longer. Below is a short guide to capacity, dimensions, the energy label and stacking a dryer on a washing machine.
Popular choices
LG tumble dryers
The widest choice in our range. LG model pages show the compatible LG washing machine and stacking kit.
Stacking kits
For installing a dryer on top of a washing machine. Our kits have a pull-out shelf for the laundry basket.
Front-loading washing machines
A dryer can only be stacked on a compatible front-loading washing machine.
Washer dryers
If there is room for one appliance only: washing and drying in one machine.
Heat pump, heating element or vented
- Heat pump dryer. A heat pump heats and cools the air, the moisture condenses in the heat exchanger and the water collects in a tank or drains away. No vent to the outside is needed. It uses less electricity; the cycle is usually longer.
- Condenser dryer with a heating element. An electric heating element heats the air and the water also collects in a tank. Usually cheaper to buy, but it uses more electricity. We do not stock this type at the moment.
- Vented dryer. The humid air is led out of the room through a hose, so it needs a vent to the outside.
The energy label since July 2025
Since 1 July 2025 tumble dryers in the EU have a new energy label with classes from A to G. The new classes do not map directly onto the old A+++ to D scale, so compare models by the new label: energy class, electricity use per 100 cycles of the eco programme, capacity, eco programme duration, condensation efficiency class, noise in dB(A) and noise class. The label is on each model page.
Capacity and dimensions
| Parameter | Our models | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 7-10 kg | The same as the washing machine or more |
| Width and height | about 60 cm, usually about 85 cm | Space in the niche or on top of the washer |
| Depth | 51-69 cm | Door opening and space at the back |
Our shallowest models are Gorenje D2HNE7E (51 cm) and Candy BPS 8N2BX (52.5 cm). Laundry needs room to tumble freely while drying: if the dryer capacity is smaller than the wash load, you will need to dry it in several batches.
A dryer on top of a washing machine
A dryer can go on top of a front-loading washing machine if both appliances are compatible and the manufacturer's stacking kit is used. The kit depends on the brand and model of both appliances, as different series take different kits. LG washing machine and dryer pages show the matching stacking kit. A ready-made tower with shared controls is the LG WashTower. A dryer cannot be placed on a top-loading washing machine.

Frequently asked questions
Does a heat pump dryer need a vent?
No. The condensed water collects in a tank that you empty after drying. On some models it can be drained into the sewer with a hose, and then the tank does not need emptying. This is stated in the specifications.
Why does a heat pump dryer take longer?
It heats the air with a heat pump rather than a powerful heating element and works at a lower temperature. The cycle is usually longer, but it uses less electricity and is gentler on fabrics.
Can everything go in the dryer?
No. Check the care label: a circle in a square means tumble drying is allowed, a crossed-out symbol means it is not. Dry wool and silk only if the label allows it and the model has a suitable programme.
How do I look after a tumble dryer?
Clean the lint filter as the manufacturer advises, usually after every cycle, and empty the water tank unless it drains into the sewer. Look after the heat exchanger filter as the manual describes; some models clean it themselves.
