How to choose a washing machine: loading, size and capacity
This category includes front-loading and top-loading, slim and built-in washing machines and washer dryers from LG, Samsung, AEG, Bosch, Electrolux, Whirlpool, Miele, Candy, Indesit and Gorenje. Some models are in our warehouse in Riga and available right away, others we order from the supplier. The cards show the price with VAT and availability, the list can be sorted by price, and the filters let you choose capacity, spin speed, energy class and dimensions. Below we sum up what to check before you buy.
Popular choices
Front-loading washing machines
The most common type, with the widest choice of capacities and programmes; it can go under a worktop if the height allows.
Top-loading washing machines
About 40 cm wide, loaded from the top. A good fit for a narrow bathroom with no room in front to open a door.
Slim washing machines up to 45 cm
Front-loading models up to 45 cm deep for a niche or a small bathroom.
Washer dryers
Washing and drying in one appliance when there is room for only one machine.
Built-in washing machines
Installed in the kitchen units behind a furniture front.
Energy-efficient washing machines (class A)
Most of our washing machines are class A. Also compare kWh per 100 cycles: a larger machine in the same class may use more.
Capacity: 6-7 kg, 8-9 kg, 10 kg and more
As a guide, 6-7 kg suits one or two people, 8-9 kg a family, and 10 kg or more a large family, duvets and less frequent washing.
Spin speed 1400 rpm and higher
The higher the speed, the less moisture stays in the laundry and the faster it dries. For everyday use 1200-1400 rpm is usually enough.
Black washing machines
If white does not suit your interior, there are also black and grey models.
By brand: LG, Samsung, AEG, Bosch, Electrolux, Whirlpool, Miele, Candy, Indesit and Gorenje.
Dimensions: will the washing machine fit
- Width. Usually about 60 cm for front-loading machines and about 40 cm for top-loading ones.
- Depth. About 50-65 cm for standard models and up to 45 cm for slim ones. The door, hoses and connections at the back need a few more centimetres.
- Height. Usually about 85 cm. If the machine goes under a worktop, compare its height with the niche in the specifications.
- Access and connection. Measure the doorways. You need a water tap, a drain outlet and an earthed socket nearby.
The exact dimensions of each model are in its specifications, and you can also select dimensions in the filters.
Energy label: what to compare
Since 1 March 2021 washing machines carry the EU energy label with classes from A to G (Regulation (EU) 2019/2014). It shows the energy consumption in kWh per 100 cycles of the Eco 40-60 programme, the rated capacity in kg, water consumption in litres per cycle, the Eco 40-60 programme duration, the spin-drying efficiency class from A to G and the noise level during spinning in dB(A) with a class from A to D. The QR code leads to the model's entry in the EPREL database.
Spin-drying efficiency class A means that less than 45 % moisture remains in the laundry after spinning. Washer dryers have two classes on the label: one for the complete wash and dry cycle and one for washing only. Each model page has a link to the product information sheet with all these data next to the price.
Noise, steam and leak protection
- Noise. If the machine stands next to a bedroom or in the kitchen, compare the noise level during spinning in dB(A) on the energy label. Models with an inverter motor usually run more quietly.
- Steam. Some models have steam programmes for refreshing laundry and washing at higher temperatures. Check the specifications to see whether a model has them.
- Leak protection. Check in the specifications whether the system protects only the casing or the inlet hose as well. In a flat it also protects the neighbours below.
Washer dryer or a separate dryer
A washer dryer takes the space of one appliance, but it can dry less laundry at a time than it washes: both capacities are in the specifications. If there is room for two appliances, a tumble dryer stacked on top of the washing machine or next to it lets you wash and dry at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Why must the transport bolts be removed before connection?
They hold the drum in place during transport. If they stay in, the machine vibrates strongly when spinning and can be damaged. Our technician removes them when connecting the machine.
What capacity do I need?
Capacity refers to dry cotton laundry. As a guide, 6-7 kg is enough for one or two people and 8-9 kg for a family. If you wash duvets or large loads, choose 10 kg or more.
Can a washing machine go under a worktop?
Yes, if it is lower than the niche and there is room for the hoses at the back. On some models the top cover can be removed, as stated by the manufacturer. If the machine must be hidden behind a furniture door, choose a built-in washing machine.
How do I compare the consumption of two washing machines?
Compare kWh per 100 cycles and litres of water per cycle on the energy label. Divide the kWh by 100, multiply by the number of washes per year and by your electricity price.
What happens to my old washing machine?
When you buy a new one with connection, we disconnect the old one and take it for recycling free of charge.
